About
About Tacoma Roofing
Tacoma Roofing is a residential and commercial roofing company serving Tacoma and Pierce County. We handle roof replacement, repair, inspection, and moss and algae removal across asphalt shingle, metal, and flat/low-slope roofing, along with commercial TPO and single-ply membrane roofing for the Port of Tacoma industrial corridor, storm and wind-damage repair with insurance-ready documentation, and re-roofing on properties inside Tacoma's North Slope and Stadium-Seminary historic districts.
What we build to
A roof looks simple from the street, and most of what determines whether it lasts is the underlayment, flashing, and fastening details nobody sees once it's installed. Per tacomapermits.org, a standard single-family or duplex re-roof is typically permit-exempt provided the old roofing is fully removed first, the new material doesn't exceed 2.5 lb/sq ft, and no roofline changes are made — a layer added over existing roofing or a roofline change does require a permit. We confirm which situation applies before we quote, rather than leaving it to you. See Tacoma's roof permit requirements.
Properties inside the North Slope Historic Special Review District or the Stadium-Seminary National Historic District face an additional requirement whenever that permit is triggered: Landmarks Preservation Commission design review under Tacoma Municipal Code 13.05.047, covering compatible roof pitch and material. We check which district (if any) a property sits in before ordering material, not after. See North Slope historic district roof permit rules and Stadium-Seminary historic district roof approval.
Why Tacoma's history and geography matter here
Tacoma has one of the largest concentrations of pre-1930 residential architecture in the country — the North Slope district alone holds 950+ properties from three distinct construction booms (1888–1893, 1902–1915, 1919–1929), roughly 80% built before 1930, in a real mix of Stick Style, Queen Anne, Craftsman, American Foursquare, Tudor Revival, and Mission Revival homes. Original roof decking on these properties commonly hides age- or storm-driven damage a modern re-roof has to account for. See common roof-deck problems on Tacoma's older homes.
Tacoma also sits directly on open water at Commencement Bay and the Tacoma Narrows — the same channel whose wind famously tore down the original 1940 Narrows Bridge. That direct Puget Sound exposure is why we install wind-rated underlayment and fastening sized to this specific waterfront condition, not a national-average spec. See what to do after windstorm roof damage.
That same wind exposure is why the insurance picture is more nuanced than most homeowners expect: sudden windstorm damage is typically a covered event under a standard WA homeowners policy, but wear-related deterioration that built up gradually over years typically is not. We document which situation applies to your roof honestly, before you file a claim, not after. See does insurance cover wind damage in Washington.
On the commercial side, the Port of Tacoma — the 6th-busiest container port in North America — sits alongside an actively expanding Fife/Puyallup Tribe warehouse and manufacturing corridor. Warehouse and logistics buildings in that footprint have real, recurring flat and low-slope roofing needs distinct from a downtown storefront or a residential job, and we price commercial work by system rather than folding it into a generic quote.
How we price
We publish cost ranges rather than making you call to find out whether you can afford us — the 2026 cost guide lays out pricing by material, and the cost calculator works from your own roof size. Estimates are free and on-site, and you get a written price with tear-off and any deck repair broken out as separate lines so you can compare it honestly against anyone else's bid.
If a repair is the better spend than a full replacement, we say so on the estimate visit — including when that means the smaller job for us.
What we will not do
We will not roof over a deck we have not inspected, we will not offer to waive your insurance deductible — that is fraud, not a discount — and we will not tell you a roof needs replacing when a repair would do. We also will not publish reviews we have not received or credentials we do not hold — if you do not see star ratings on this site, that is deliberate.
